Beauty Advice: Heal It Fast [May. 1st, 2010|01:00 am]

Heal It Fast
When something suddenly pops up, here is how to clear it up!

Seventeen Magazine Tip: Use your spot treatment like a mask: Apply it
once a week for 15 minutes, then rinse.

Treat Your Pimple
Each breakout is different--so target your specific type
to make it go away quicker.

What it is:
A clogged open pore filled with excess oil and dead skin cells.
When the oil in your pores mixes with oxygen in the air, it can turn
the very top of the spot black.

How to treat it:
A spot treatment with glycolic and salicylic acids exfoliates the dead
skin cells while silicone dioxide absorbs oil.
Try: Dr. Brandt Pores No More Vacuum Cleaner, $45

What it is:
A pore that gets infected by a combination of
dead skin cells and bacteria.
The infection inflames the skin around it and causes a pus-filled head.

How to treat it:
Salicylic acid unclogs pores, but a cleanser that also contains aloe
and chamomile will reduce redness.

What it is:
An extremely swollen and painful pimple deep beneath the skin.
Many times, these zits never break the surface, can take weeks to heal,
and could leave a scar.

How to treat it:
You need the strongest possible medication you can get without
a prescription, 10% benzoyl peroxide, to kill the bacteria deep
within the pore.

Zit News You Need To Know
If what you're trying hasn't been working, here are three new
options to try:

With this kit, you get free direct phone and e-mail access to a skincare
specialist. She'll tell you how to use it to treat your specific
type of acne.
$65

Not everyone's acne is alike! Whether your breakouts are hormonal
or hereditary, this brand customizes a regimen for you.
$40

Epiduo
This prescription gel works similarly to Differin by keeping pores
clear of dead skin, but it has the added bonus of benzoyl peroxide
to kill bacteria beneath the surface.
Prescription only.

Emergency!
Got a big event and a big zit?
Try one of these concentrated treatments to zap it fast!

At the doctor:
Cortisone Shot
If you have a fully formed zit, your doc can give you an injection to
shrink the swelling and make it less noticeable.

At home:
Salicylic Acid Pen
When you feel one coming, this delivers a big dose of medicine
to keep it from surfacing.

Seventeen Magazine Tip: Hold a cold-compress on a new pimple for five
minute intervals throughout the day to reduce swelling and redness.

Beauty Advice: Aah Spa [Apr. 25th, 2010|09:24 pm]

By:
 Erica Metzger

Book your bathroom for an afternoon of skin, hair and nail pampering.
We've got everything you need except the "Do Not Disturb" sign.

Head-To-Toe Soothers

Step 1: Soak In the Tub

When you're feeling stressed, a leisurely dip can definitely take the edge off. "A warm bath that lasts at least 15 minutes releases feel-good endorphins, improves skin circulation and reduces muscle tension," says dermatologist Zein Obagi, M.D., founder of the Obagi Skin Care Institute, in Beverly Hills. Maximize the skin softening effect of your bathwater by adding bath gel, salts or oil.

Try: Ahava Placid Bath Salts, $19, or Aveeno Stress Relieve Foaming Bath, $6.

Go ahead! Splurge on a great-smelling
body product.

Products:

- L'Oreal EverStrong Deep Replenishing Masque, $9
- Laura Mercier 'Crème de Pistache' Honey Bath, $40
- Boots Botanics Organic Nourishing Body Oil, $11.99
- Korres Basil Lemon Body Scrub, $17
- H2O Plus Natural Sea Sponge, $14

Step 2: Hydrate Your Hair

Whatever your hair type, you'll benefit from a hair mask, says Marc Mena, senior stylist at Warren Tricomi, a salon in New York City. After all, you probably blow-dry or color treat and have full, frayed strands to show for it. If your hair is thick and coarse, apply your mask all over, from scalp to the ends. For fine or thin hair, only coat the ends.

Try: Aussie Moist Deep 3 Minute Miracle Treatment, $3, or Fekkai Salon Technician Color Care Rapid Results Moisture Mask, $35.

Step 3: Exfoliate Your Skin

We think an all-over body scrub is the best part of the spa experience. Foaming sugar scrubs are our favorite at-home choice buffing away dead skin because they don't irritate like salt-based formulas or leave the tub greasy like oil-based ones. Before you turn on the shower, massage a palmful of scrub all over your body in a circular motion starting from the neck down, says Laura Hittleman, corporate beauty director at Canyon Ranch. Now rinse it all off, including your hair mask.

Try: Soap & Glory Some Like It Hot Thermal Scrub, $12, or Bliss Orange and White Pepper Sugar Scrub, $36.

Step 4: Moisture and Massage

"Use an oil when your skin is damp because it holds moisture on the surface of the skin," says Shelley Bawlec, global spa director for Aveda. Take an extra few minutes to gently massage the moisturizer into your skin.

Try: Weleda Pomegranate Regenerating Body Oil, $28, or Johnson's Baby Creamy Oil Cocoa and Shea Butter, $4.

Facials Made Simple

Step 1: Cleanse

Wash with a mild formula like Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, $10.50, to remove makeup and oils. "It's very important to have clean skin to ensure you get the most from your facial," says Wendy Allred, education manager for Bliss Spas.

Step 2: Buff

To remove dead skin, use a buffing scrub with round microbeads. If your skin is on the sensitive side, a light peel that contains enzymes or alpha hydroxy acids is a nonabrasive option.

Step 3: Steam

Steam softens and loosens pore-clogging debris. To do it at home, fill a big bowl with hot water. Lean your face over it for three to five minutes with a towel draped over your head. Afterward, if you're dying to tackle blackheads in your T-zone, use Biore Deep Cleansing Pore Strips, $6, but resist the urge to squeeze them out.

Step 4: Apply A Mask

Pick a moisturizing mask if your skin is dry or a clay-based one if it's oily. Avoiding the area around the eyes, smooth a thin layer over your face, neck and chest. Got combination skin? Then use the clay mask on the T-zone and the moisturizing mask everywhere else. After you rinse it off, apply face cream.

Products:

- Olay Pro-X Intensive Firming Treatment Kit, $64
- Neutrogena Ageless Restoratives 5 Minute Facial, $25
- St. Ives Mineral Clay Firming Mask, $5.49
- A brush helps you apply your mask in a smooth, even layer.

Products:

- Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew The Brusher Gel Cleanser, $6.99 - Gives you a post-facial glow thanks to its exfoliating soft brush applicator.
- Zeno Hot Spot Blemish Clearing Device, $39.99 - Uses thermal energy to zap pimples brewing below the skin's surface.
- Clarisonic Mia Sonic Skin Cleansing Device, $149 - Has oscillating bristles that cleanse, exfoliate and massage all at once.
- Tanda Professional Skincare System, $395 - Is an economical, palm-size alternative to pricey photo-facials.

Pedicure Pointers

-  It's easier to conquer calluses when skin is dry, so exfoliate rough spots with a foot file first, then soak them for 15 minutes.

- Next, use a grainy foot scrub or pumice stone to slough away residual roughness. Rinse, dry off your feet and apply a thick cream to tops, soles, heels and nails.

- Use an orange stick to push back your cuticles. Then clip nails and file them straight across in one direction to avoid ingrowns. Apply a nail-polish color that's light, like sheer pink or beige, says Allred. "Opaque and dark shades tend to tattle if you make a mistake."

5-Minute No-Color Manicure
Bare, groomed nails look neat and healthy, plus you don't have to deal with drying time, smudges or chips.

- Don't Be A Square
File nails in a natural round shape. Don't worry about being too precise.

- Shine On
Smooth your nails with a buffing block. This leaves them as glossy as if you had applied a topcoat.

- Clean Up

Brighten the whites of your nails by cleaning underneath with a cotton swab dipped in remover.

- Try Hot Oil
Drop your bottle of cuticle oil into a mug of hot water for a few minutes, then apply to nails as a perfect hydrating finisher.

Products:

- Carol's Daughter Lemon and Jojoba Cuticle Oil, $10
- Sephora Nail Buffer Set, $8
- Revlon Crystal Nail File, $7.99

Chill-Out Essentials
You know that incredible scent and soothing vibe that hits you the minute you walk into a spa?
Here's how to conjure up the experience at home!

- Hot Tea
"A cup of chamomile tea will help you unwind," says Cornelia Zicu, chief creative officer of Red Door Spa.

- Mellow Tunes
You don't need to download the latest New Age album--just play your favorite relaxing music. "We like to use R&B mixed with modern jazz," says Allred.

- Aromatherapy
Add a few drops of a calming essential oil like lavender into your bathwater or massage a blend of chamomile and peppermint into your temples.

- Fluffy Towels
Have a fresh washed towel or cozy robe ready to wrap yourself up in.

- Soft Lighting
Dim the lights and place a few candles around the room.

- Cucumbers
Drop a few slices into your ice water or place them over your eyes to help soothe puffy bags.

Party Ideas: Harry Potter Themed [Apr. 13th, 2010|09:44 pm]

Official Hogwarts Invitations

Set the tone of the party ahead of time with authentic invitations that look like they came directly from Hogwarts!

What you’ll need:

Parchment Paper and Envelopes in “Natural”
Hogwarts Seal (Found Online)
Red Sealing Wax
Seal Stamp
Calligraphy Pen (Optional)

Directions: Place the Hogwarts seal at the top of your invitation design, and the title “Hogwarts School of Witches and Wizardry” along the bottom. Add the party details, utilizing a clever language style inspired by the movie. For example: “We are pleased to inform you that you have been invited to a special birthday celebration in honor of new head boy/girl _____________. The festivities will commence at the stroke of noon.”

Tip: For extra authenticity, close the back of the envelopes with a red wax seal and use calligraphy for the mailing addresses.

Enchanted Dragon Egg Decor

Dragons are an important part of the wizard world and a favorite of Hogwarts gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid, who even kept one as a pet! Use these Enchanted Dragon Eggs for Magical Creature Hunts or as extra party décor.

What you’ll need:

Large Plastic Easter Eggs
Metallic Gold Paint
Fleck-Stone Paint (Available at Craft or Home Improvement Stores)

Directions: Find an open, outdoor space to paint the eggs. Protect the surface that you’ll be painting on with a layer of newspaper or plastic trash bags. Spray some of the plastic eggs with fleck-stone paint for a mysterious, speckled finish and others with metallic gold to reference Harry’s first task in the Twiwizard Tournament from Goblet of Fire: stealing a golden dragon egg from a nesting mother.

Tip: For extra “enchantment”, add a final coat of shimmery glitter spray to the painted eggs.

Potion Jar Centerpieces

Potions is one of the most popular classes at Hogwarts, so make sure you have an ample supply of Gillyweed and Hippogriff Gizzards on hand!

What you’ll need:

Glass Jars In Different Sizes
Labels For Jars
Food Coloring
Water
Variety of Odd-Looking Substances To Serve as “Magical” Ingredients

Directions: Fill the jars with different substances and label them according to the potions and ingredients mentioned in the Harry Potter movies. The more creepy and gross-sounding the better! For example:

• Prunes = Dried Beetles
• Weeds In Green Water = Gillyweed
• Maple Syrup = Truth Serum
• Purple Water with Loose Tea Leaves = Dream Fluid
• Black Lentils = Bats Eyes
• Smoked Oysters = Hippogriff Gizzards
• Dirt + Water = Hollow Stump Soil
• Cocktail Onions = Blind Cat Eyes
• Spaghetti with Red Sauce = Blood Worms

Tip: Need help with the jar labels? Download our printable label templates.

Magic Drinks

Kids will stare wide-eyed as they watch clear water or soda transform into a vibrant color… must be magic!

What you’ll need:

Plastic Party Cups
Food Coloring
Ice
Water
Lemon-Lime Soda

Directions: Place 2 to 3 drops of food coloring at the bottom of each party cup and let dry. Just before serving the drinks, fill each cup with ice to hide the food coloring. While each child watches, pour the drink over the ice, and the clear water or soda will “magically” turn into a color as it fills their cup! Use different colors of food coloring so that the kids won’t know what color to expect from their “magic” soda.

Tip: Add a “fortune telling” element to the drinks by assigning a meaning to each color and displaying the different meanings on a small sign near the soda. For example, purple = royalty, green = wealth, yellow = long life. Whichever color each guest’s soda turns also predicts their personal “fortune.”

Licorice Wizard Wands

Expecto Patronum! Whether they’re casting spells or disappearing into bellies, these super-easy treats are a fun addition to any wizard party.

What you’ll need:

Black Licorice Sticks
White Candy Melts
White Nonpareils (Candy Sprinkles)
Wax Paper
Baking Sheet
Orange M&M's

Directions: Line baking sheet with wax paper and set aside. Melt the candy melts according to package instructions. Dip tips of each licorice twist into the melted candy to create the top part of the “wand,” then sprinkle with white nonpareils while the candy is still wet. Place the wands on wax paper and let dry until the candy coating is firm. Display in a bed of orange M&M's.

Tip: To create multicolored wands, use Rainbow Twizzlers instead of black licorice, along with different shapes and colors of candy sprinkles.

Wizard Hat Cupcakes

These adorable, sugar cone-topped cupcakes will entice both aspiring wizards and Muggles alike!

What you’ll need:

Chocolate Cake Mix,
Vanilla Icing
Silver Cupcake Liners
Sugar Cones
Chocolate Chips
Chocolate Candy Melts
Chocolate Sprinkles
Yellow Decorator Frosting.

Directions:

1. Bake cupcakes according to package instructions. Let cool, then frost and set aside

2. Melt the chocolate chips or chocolate candy melts according to package instructions. Pour the melted chocolate into a shallow pan and roll the sugar cones in the chocolate until completely covered. Place the cones upside down on a sheet of wax paper and allow chocolate to harden and dry.

3. Place a chocolate cone on top of each frosted cupcake, then pipe lightning bolts onto the cones with yellow frosting.

Tip: Even easier: Start out with purchased chocolate cupcakes and chocolate frosting, and skip all the baking!

Honeyduke Treat Mix

Honeyduke's Sweet Shop is a candy and treat store in the Village of Hogsmeade. In addition to being a favorite among Hogwarts students, it also serves as one of the secret passages out of the school.

What you’ll need:

Honey Nut Chex Mix
Burgundy and Yellow M&M's
Novelty Gummy Candies (Like Frogs and Worms)
Mixing Bowl
Mini Plastic Cauldrons
Small Treat Bags (Available At Craft or Party Stores)

Directions: Pour Honey Nut Chex Mix (or your own favorite party mix) into a large bowl. Add burgundy and yellow M&M's, gummy candies and any other novelty candies that you’d like to include. Stir and mix well. Serve from a large bowls/jars or fill individual treat containers with the mix.

Tip: Label the bowls of mix or individual treats with a special sign that reads “Honeyduke’s Treat Mix.” (Download printable sign.)

Sorting Hat House Assignments

Just like the students in the books, use a Sorting Hat to “magically” assign party guests to one of the 4 houses of Hogwarts. This is a fun activity on its own, or a great way to break guests up into teams for party games and activities.

What you’ll need:

Costume Sorting Hat
Stool or Chair
Buttons or Badges Representative of the 4 Houses of Hogwarts: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin

Directions: Gather everyone around the Sorting Hat stool or chair. One by one, ask each guest to sit in the chair and place the Sorting Hat on their head. Next, have them close their eyes, reach into a bag and pull out a button or badge that bears the name of one of the 4 houses. This is the house to which they are officially “assigned.” Use the teams as table assignments or just for fun.

Tip: Create your own house badges by searching for the Hogwarts house crests online. Print and glue the crests onto nametags or use them to create your own buttons.

Quidditch Broomstick Favors

As a nod to the most popular witches and wizard sport, send party guests home with their very own Quidditch broomstick.

What you’ll need:

2 Standard Lunch-Sized Paper Lunch Bags Per Broomstick
Scissors
Gold Ribbon
Candy or Another Treat Filler

Directions: Trim 2” off the top of the paper bags. Open the first bag, push out the base until it forms a squared-off triangle shape and fold in the left and right sides to flatten it out. Starting from the top, cut the flattened bag into thin strips, stopping short of the base (just above the bottom crease).

Cut just the top of the second bag into thin strips, approximately 1.5” deep. Fill this bag with treats and place it inside of the first bag. Gather the sides of both bags, insert a pretzel rod in the middle and cinch the tops of the two bags together around the pretzel rod. Secure with gold ribbon.

Tip: To play up the theme, include gold foil-wrapped chocolate balls in the treat bags to represent the Quidditch “Golden Snitch” (a small, winged golden ball).

Italian Recipes: Easy Marinara Sauce [Mar. 13th, 2010|10:54 pm]
livngdeadashley
[Tags|, , , , , ]

This is a pretty standard recipe with an added splash of balsamic vinegar to brighten the flavor. The sauce freezes beautifully, so consider doubling the recipe and freezing a batch for next time.

Serves: 14
Serving Size: 1/2 Cup

Ingredients:

- 1 large Onion, finely chopped
- 4 cloves Garlic, finely minced
- 2 tbsp. Balsamic Vinegar
- 2 cans (28 oz. each) no-salt-added crushed Tomatoes
- 1 tbsp. dried Italian Herb Blend (or 2 tsp dried Basil plus 2 tsp. dried Oregano)
- 1/2 tsp. crushed Red Pepper Flakes
- Kosher Salt and Black Pepper

1. Liberally coat a 5-qt saucepan with nonstick spray, and heat it over medium heat.

2. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, just until translucent, about 5 minutes.

3. Stir in the garlic and balsamic vinegar and cook for 1 minute.

4. Add the tomatoes, Italian seasoning and red pepper flakes, and bring to a boil. Then reduce the heat to low and simmer gently, covered, for 30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Craft Tutorials: Paper Bowls [Mar. 12th, 2010|01:44 am]
livngdeadashley
[Tags|, , , , , , , ]

Found @ Woman's Day

A great way to recycle paper, these lovely bowls are a snap to make.

Materials

- 4 sheets of Fuchsia Heavy-Weight Paper, 12" (30.5cm) square, (such as card stock)
- 2 sheets of Orange Heavy-Weight Paper, 12" (30.5cm) square, (such as card stock)
- 3 sheets of Red Heavy-Weight Paper, 12" (30.5cm) square, (such as card stock)
- Paper Shredder or Scissors
- Glue
- Water
- 3 Nesting Bowls
- Brush
- Cling Wrap, (Enough to cover the outer area of the 3 bowls.)

Finished Size

6" x 2½" (15cm x 6.5cm)—small bowl
8" x 3½" (20.5cm x 9cm)—medium bowl
10" x 4" (25.5cm x 10cm)—large bowl

Time: 1-2 Hours Per Bowl
Note: This does not include drying time, which can take up to two days.

Instructions

1. Shred the fuchsia paper using an office crosscut paper shredder. If using a regular paper shredder, cut the strips into lengths of about 11/2" (3.8cm). If no paper shredder is available, use scissors to cut strips of paper that are 1/8" x 1/2" (3mm x 3.8cm).

2. Prepare a solution of glue and water that is 2 parts of glue per 1 part water. Don’t add too much water, or the paper will not hold together. Each bowl will require at least 1/2 cup (118ml) of the drippy glue solution.

3. Wrap the large bowl with cling wrap, and place it upside down on a surface covered with plastic.

4. Place the fuchsia shredded paper into another bowl, and sprinkle with some water (no more than 1 tablespoon [15ml]) to dampen the card stock.

5. Start by brushing the bottom of the cling-wrapped bowl with some of the glue solution. Add a small clump of paper (about 4–6 strips) in random fashion, and brush or dab more glue solution over them until they are damp enough that they lay flat and adhere to the bowl.

Instead of using colored card stock, this is the perfect opportunity to make something out of shredded office paper. The bowls will end up looking more rustic with the different colors of paper and typographic elements on them.

6. Continue adding clumps of paper strips, brushing the area they will cover with the glue solution and then brushing the glue solution over them. Cover the bowl until you’re about 2" (5cm) from the top edge of the bowl or the work surface. The bowl should be covered by at least 3 levels of paper to ensure stability. The edge of the bowl needs to be generally even, but keep it ragged by making some of the strips on the final row point downward, perpendicular to the work surface.

Tip: It’s important that the glue stay w enough to firmly hold the bowl together. The consistency of the 2 parts glue to 1 part water should resemble liquid soap. As you apply the glue solution, keep in mind that the more layers of paper are added the stronger the bowls will be. Allow drying time between layers.

Note: Don’t worry about covering the surface completely. Part of the charm of the bowls is to leave some small spaces, no larger than 1/8" (6mm), between some of the strips.

7. Place the bowl in a dry and well-ventilated area, and let the surface dry completely. This process may take a day or two. If you’d like to speed it, place the bowl close to a Instead of using colored card stock, this is the perfect opportunity to make something out of shredded office paper. The bowls will end up looking more rustic with the different colors of paper and typographic elements on them. fan. Once the surface appears dry to the touch, carefully remove the bowl from the cling wrap and let it air dry face up until the inside of the bowl is completely dry as well.

8. Repeat the same process (steps 1-7) for the medium bowl using red paper and the smallest bowl using orange paper.
